The Australian arm of a German engineering company has been fined $64,000 for importing prohibited asbestos in machinery parts. Sydney-based Clyde Bergemann Senior Thermal Pty Ltd was ordered on 7 May, 2012 in the Perth Magistrates Court to pay the fine after being found guilty of two counts of importing prohibited products.

The company in 2009 and 2010 imported 122 machinery parts from China that were found by Customs and Border Protection to contain chrysotile or white asbestos, which can cause adverse health effects, including lung cancer. The company had imported the parts for a power plant development.
